Death and Taxes

revenue

The subject of bin charges got me thinking. In recent years Ireland has seen the introduction of a plethora of so called “stealth taxes”, including bin charges, a property tax and soon to be launched water charges.

So, as a tax payer in this country, I’m wondering what my taxes actually pay for.

I pay private health insurance, road tax, waste charges, TV and dog licences, a plastic bag tax, a universal social charge and PRSI. After much reflection the only thing my taxes contribute to outside of these are the Defence Forces and the Gardaí. And since we’re unlikely to be invaded anytime soon and my only interactions with the Gardaí have been on the wrong end of speeding fines, I don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth.
