Grave matters

3 crosses

International media today have been reporting a horrific story of a mass grave of Irish infants that has just been discovered in Tuam, Co. Galway.

The grave was on the site of an institution that sheltered orphaned and illegitimate children.

The story has precipitated the usual torrent of outrage on social media sites in this country.

But what the reports fail to elucidate is that this mass grave was discovered in 1975. Its existence has been known for almost 40 years and locals have tended the surrounding land and actively campaigned for a suitable memorial.

The fact that the grave exists is a tragedy, but the question for me is why is this being dragged up again now and presented as new news? Whose agenda is this serving?
